India court
recognises transgender people as third gender
“Hijra” is an Indian
term for transgender people, transsexual or cross-dressers. They had been
discriminated and criminalized by British colonial law set in 1871 until 1949
when India became independent and repealed the discriminating law. However,
those who choose not to belong to either more-commonly-accepted-and-recognized
gender, have been discriminated and forced to live in poverty.
Now, India’s Supreme
Court ruled that the government is required to give the same status, recognition
and benefits to them like other minorities.
