Transatlantic flight nears supersonic
speeds
Any idea what and how much tailwinds do to
an airplane? While average passenger flights cruise around 900 plus kilometers
per hour, this BA flight from New York to London reached its top speed up to
1,200 km per hour, being pushed by strong jet stream that reached as fast as
322 km per hour. As the speed of sound is 1,234 km per hour, the passenger
flight flew like sound or a jet fighter. The passengers seemed to be the ones most
benefited but crew members must have been busy completing their duties within
shorted time.
However, those flying toward the other
direction, east to west, got the same level of headwinds, which added extra
time on the scheduled flight times.
